February Update

2/8/2019

Greetings Musicians,

I felt it necessary, due to our current weather predicaments, to write this blog post to update everyone on the upcoming trips and choir events. Please share this post with others so that everyone is caught up. Thank you.

1. Due to the crazy weather and events of the last four weeks, I have decided to cancel the scheduled Feb. 21 middle school choir concert. The music that we have ready will be re-purposed for the Spring Concert and it will allow the middle school classes to work on some much needed composition, arrangement, and creativity projects. I promise that there will be significant educational opportunities in lieu of the missed concert. The next middle school event will be the Spring Concert on May 15 (7PM).

2. Snap - Also due to weather and unforeseen circumstances, the SNAP fundraiser was pushed back a whole month! We are scheduled to begin our SNAP RAISE fundraiser next week Wednesday. Please collect email addresses from friends and family to prepare for this fundraiser. Email addresses WILL NOT be sold or shared. Please checkout their website to learn more: https://snap-raise.zendesk.com/hc/en-us

3. Cedar Point: Everything is wrapping up nicely for the Cedar Point trip. Chaperones, it is imperative that you fill-out background checks in the HS main office ASAP. Background checks from previous school years will not be sufficient. The trip is scheduled for May 25 and I will post updates as they become available to me.

4. The HS Spring Concert date in the syllabus and MS newsletter earlier this year was incorrect. The correct date for the HS Spring Concert is Thursday, May 16th.

5. Disney - I would very much appreciate it if all chaperones filled out a background check ASAP as well as in the fall. That way we can make necessary adjustments sooner than later. A few people asked if they can make payments after the date and I didn't realize that there was an 8% late fee if done so. I have asked (and been granted) a waive of the Feb 1st late fee. Please make all payments BEFORE the due date to avoid any penalties. Here is a reminder of the payment schedule: Payment Schedule:
  1. Deposit $120 - Due Oct. 26
  2. 2nd $333 - Due Feb. 1
  3. 3rd $333 - Due May. 17
  4. 4th $333 - Due Sept. 13

Next Year
  • I am happy to announce that next year the middle school will have an Honors Choir! 7th and 8th grade choirs will be combined and 48 7th and 8th graders will be placed in Honors Choir. Placement will be based on grades from this year. Students must be in choir at OV for at least one semester before entering Honors Choir.
  • I am confident that this opportunity will be beneficial for both choirs.

Aladdin

Viewing Account Balance

At the January meeting, I proposed paying an additional $29 to see Aladdin as all other shows were sold out/too expensive. The vote won almost unanimously. This has been added to everyone's total.
Everyone has been assigned a number and can now view their payments and amount owed at www.orchardviewchoir.com/nyc. If you were not at the meeting, please see me during class to receive your number.

NYC Info Sheet
(handout from January meeting)

Payments: All payments are due by March 8, you can check how much you’ve paid/still owe using your trip number at: www.orchardviewchoir.com/nyc.  We will be starting a fundraiser this week. It will be similar to a GoFundMe

Bus Ride: Approximately 12-13 hours (we will stop at rest stops along the way). We will be watching movies and then attempting to sleep. You may bring a blanket and a pillow if you would like. Usually people will bring headphones, snacks, and games as well. Usually (but not always) the rest stops we stop at will have vending machines.

Chaperones: There will be six chaperones including myself, Jera (my wife/our accompanist), and the tour guide. Chaperones will be given a list of students to attend to during the trip. I will set-up a Remind to message everyone for emergencies, reminders, and schedule info.

Hotel: There will be four people to a room at the hotel. Students will sign-up for rooms at a later date. There will be a night time security guard stationed outside in the hall for emergencies and to guarantee everyone stays in their room. This is so the chaperones can take a break and get some sleep.

Food: Breakfast will be at the hotel (expanded continental), for lunch you will each be given $10, dinner will be a group meal (pizza party, restaurant, dinner cruise, ect). If you would like snacks on the bus or more money for lunch you will need to bring your own. If you want to get the full NYC experience you could bring $5 extra per lunch ($20).

Souvenirs: This is a personal preference. I usually don’t buy souvenirs unless I find something truly unique. The experience is the souvenir.

Clothing: According to holiday-weather.com, NYC will be between 40-60 degrees fahrenheit in April. You will want a jacket or coat and pants because we will be spending a large amount of time outside. Make sure to bring comfortable walking shoes as we will be doing a considerable amount of walking!

NYC Travel: We will be traveling around NYC by bus and by foot. We will take the tour bus when possible and walk when necessary. As you might guess, the bus will be hard to maneuver the busy NYC streets, so we will need to walk quite a bit! Bring comfy shoes!

Refund: As long as someone is able to take your spot on the trip you will receive a full refund. This will be increasingly difficult for people to accommodate the later you choose to cancel. If you think you may not be able to go, please tell me ASAP.

Disclaimer: The school, chaperones, and myself are not responsible for the loss, theft, or destruction of any items you choose to bring on the trip (phones, game devices, etc). You may bring what you like at your own discretion.

The 2017-2018 OV Choir syllabus is being handed out today! This one page document includes: expectations, the calendar, grading scale, concert information, and our learning targets. It is very important that every parent/guardian view and sign this document (due Fri, Oct. 6).

I included both the middle school and high school dates on the calendar, you are encouraged to attend all the events if you can! The middle school has three mandatory concerts: 12/14, 2/22, and 5/16. The high school has nine dates (see calendar).

If a syllabus is lost or forgotten, you can download a replacement below. Also, you may return to this page at any time to view the syllabus. Please check the website calendar for updates. Thanks!

Popcorn and Cookie Dough Fundraiser

9/29/2017

Happy Friday!

On Monday (Oct. 2) the choir will start their fall cookie dough and popcorn fundraiser with The Goodies Factory! Money raised goes toward the choir's general fund and helps support and maintain the reputation of excellence enjoyed by Orchard View Choir.

If a HS student is planning on attending the NYC trip in April, $5 per item sold will be credited toward their trip payment.

On Monday, the students will receive two brochures, an item order sheet, and this cover letter.

This fundraiser is a fantastic way to support the Orchard View choir program and enjoy some delicious treats!
